Practical Pathology for Pathologists

PRACTICAL PATHOLOGY FOR PATHOLOGISTS

A Structured 12-Month Journey from Diagnostic Foundations to Advanced Practice

MODULE 1 — GENERAL DIAGNOSTIC APPROACH

Timeline: Weeks 1–2

Build a systematic foundation for approaching any histopathology slide.

Learning Path:

Diagnostic Algorithm
Common Slide Artifacts & Diagnostic Pitfalls
Pattern Recognition
Cell Lineage Recognition
Immunohistochemistry (IHC)

Goal: Develop a consistent, practical approach to slide interpretation before moving into case-based training.

MODULE 2 — ROUTINE LABORATORY PRACTICE

Timeline: Weeks 3–8

Class A Cases — The Core of Daily Practice

Systematic exposure to 180+ common histopathology entities, selected to represent high-frequency routine pathology practice, with prioritization informed by GLOBOCAN cancer statistics.

Focus:

  • Common malignant tumors

  • Frequently encountered benign lesions

  • Inflammatory and reactive conditions

  • Important mimics and diagnostic pitfalls

  • Key microscopic diagnostic features

  • Appropriate use of ancillary studies and IHC

Target: 180+ core routine entities

MODULE 3 — GROWING DIAGNOSTIC EXPERIENCE

Timeline: Months 3–6

Class B Cases + Variants of Class A Cases

Expand beyond the core routine workload into the next tier of commonly encountered and diagnostically important entities.

Weekly case-based training covering:

  • Class B histopathology cases

  • Important variants of Class A entities

  • Broader differential diagnoses

  • Less typical morphological presentations

  • Practical diagnostic problem-solving

Target: 70+ additional entities

By the end of this stage, the aim is to move from recognizing common diagnoses to confidently handling their variants and differential diagnoses.

MODULE 4 — ADVANCED DIAGNOSTIC PRACTICE

Timeline: Months 7–12

Class C Cases + Advanced Variants + FRCPath Cases

Progress to challenging, less common, and examination-level diagnostic material through weekly advanced cases.

Coverage includes:

  • Class C histopathology cases

  • Challenging variants of Class A cases

  • Challenging variants of Class B cases

  • Rare and diagnostically difficult entities

  • Complex differential diagnoses

  • Previous FRCPath examination cases

  • Exam-oriented diagnostic reasoning

Target: 140+ new challenging entities
